This Primer series for young beginners (ages-5-6) begins with pre-staff notation, and proceeds to reading on the grand staff. The combination of original, folk, and seasonal songs, and full-color artwork makes learning a treat. Students who complete both Primers A & B are ready for study in Level 1 of Bastien Piano Basics.

Primer A is for beginners ages 5-6; traditional middle C approach begins with pre-staff notation; grand staff is introduced on page 28.

The Primer B Level is a continuation of the method for students who have completed Primer A.

The Primer Level is for average age beginners (7-11). It uses pre-staff notation before introducing the grand staff. Reading is presented with steps, skips, and repeated notes. Music includes a variety of original works, folk songs, and pop styles, many with duet accompaniments.

Level 1 may be used with students who have completed any Primer Level. It begins with easy pieces in the C position and presents C, F, and G 5-finger positions.

Level 2 presents binary and ternary form, one-octave scales with tetrachords identified, intervals of 6th and 7th, primary chords, triads and inversions, 6/8 time, and the keys of D, A, and E.

Level 3 presents relative minor scales (a and d), octaves, minor key signatures, major-minor triads, primary chords in minor, various bass styles, triplets, the chromatic scale, and the kyes of D-flat, A-flat, and E-flat.

Level 4 presents the overlapping pedal, 1st and 2nd inversion triads, sixteenth notes, dotted eigth notes, altered intervals, augmented and diminished triads, syncopation, parallel major and minor scales, grace notes, and the keys of G-flat, B-flat, and B.
